Wye Oak - "The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs"

OOOOOOH. Wye Oak are back! The title-track from the Baltimore duo's upcoming LP on Merge Records is up now and the album is out April 6th. You can pre-order it now and check out the very electronic and awkwardly dance-able track below.

Gitkin - "Cancion Del Ray"

While I'm hesitant to believe the backstory Wonderwheel Recordings shared for 5 Star Motel, what I have no doubt of is that after listening to "Cancion Del Ray" multiple times, I can't wait to hear the rest of this debut album from Gitkin.

Charlotte Day Wilson - "Nothing New"

I know that be releasing EPs at a steady clip, Wilson is providing just as much music as we'd get from a full-length, but every time I hear a song from her, I just want to hear MORE.

The Stone Woman EP drops February 23rd and between "Nothing New" (below) and "Doubt" it's a guaranteed winner.

Birthday Boy & Trish - "Just One Kiss"

Toronto duo Birthday Boy & Trish just dropped the Joseph EP on January 15th and while it took a week to cross my radar, I'm glad it did because I am always down for some tasty future soul music, particularly when it's got the MAPL wheel! Add this to your Chris LaRocca, Precious Lo's, Pomo et al. playlists.

The Yearning - "Do You Remember?"

Elefant Records just sent me the Take Me All Over The World "Mini LP" from The Yearning and I've always been a fan of beautiful sugary pop tunes with a retro vibe and breathy vocals so "Do You Remember" and Maddie Dobie's vocals definitely hit my sweet spot.

You can order the 10-inch here.

Helena Deland - "There Are A Thousand"

Montreal's Deland was previously featured on RR for "Baby" in 2016 and she's back with the gorgeous lead-off to From the Series of Songs "Altogether Unaccompanied" Vol. I & II. Can't wait til March 2nd to hear the rest.

Morrison Kincannon - "On Mt. Diablo"

Andrew Jervis does it again. Great cut from Bandcamp weekly - this from a collection of long-lost recordings by 60s/70s California folk duo Morrison Kincannon coming out at the end of January on UK label Spacetalk. This is some Laurel Canyon loveliness. They had me at "woh oh whoa."

Shabaka Hutchings - "Black Skin, Black Masks"

Shabaka Hutchings - of Shabaka and the Ancestors - drops a new cut as part of a very promising compilation of up-and-coming UK jazz acts coming out on Brownswood. We Out Here drops February 9th and you can pre-order it now and preview three of the cuts including Hutchings'.

Joe Armon-Jones & Maxwell Owin - Idiom

Gilles Peterson is in NYC right now for a Winter jazz fest and did a special ep. of Brownswood Basement spotlighting UK jazz where he brought in a bunch of folks including Yazz Ahmed (who was responsible for one of my Top 10 albums of last year). But one name he featured that was unfamiliar to me was Joe Armon-Jones.

Did a little dig and discovered this release from last fall with Maxwell Owin and it is a tight mix of jazz and beats. "Idiom" featuring Oscar Jerome is a particular stunner.

Typhoon - Offerings

New year, and time to get back to spotlighting new music and not just running down the year-end goods.

January 12th marks the release date for Offerings, the latest from Typhoon. I was fortunate enough to hear the full-length via Roll Call Records and had hoped to spotlight "Remember" or "Chiaroscuro," my personal faves, but only two tracks are currently streaming at the Bandcamp link below.
